Description |
The second group of applications process series of images of the same object taken in different lighting conditions. The first algorithm of this type dedicated to documenting and analysing cultural heritage was surface reflectance transformation, developed in 2000 at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. One year later, the same team from Hewlett-Packard Laboratories developed another method for picture enhancement – polynomial texture mapping (PTM). Since then, surface reflectance transformation was further developed by Cultural Heritage Imaging and today is commonly known as reflectance transformation imaging (RTI). In the traditional approach, as an input, RTI needs photos taken on the field with the help of a tripod, strong portable light source, two black balls that later on help to calculate angles of illumination, measuring tape, and string. Usually, 40–90 images are collected, each with different vertical and horizontal angles of illumination. This method is mainly used when the distinguishing feature of an artefact is not the colour itself but rather its spatial shape, or both. In this last case, an interesting implementation of the method described here is the use of RTI on images enhanced with DStretch algorithms. (English) |
