Open Science Resource Atlas 2.0 (AZON)

The project "Open Science Resource Atlas 2.0" aims to increase the accessibility, improve the quality and extend the reusability of science resources.

The project is carried out by the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (the leader) together with partners: Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, Wrocław Medical University and the Institute of Systems Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.

The project focuses on the digital sharing of resources of great importance to the field of science and economy. These include publications, scripts, lectures, 3D models, audio and video recordings, photos, input and output files of various computer programs, databases collecting data from various fields, machines, systems, language corpora and many others.

By July 2022, 22,550 documents will be made available and 5,200 will be additionally digitized. The target group, apart from academics, students and doctoral students, is everyone interested, including entrepreneurs and, what is important and unique - disabled, blind, visually impaired and deaf people.

As part of the first edition of the AZON Project, over 40,000 materials of various types were made available. By 2020, they had been downloaded almost 4 million times.

General purpose of the project

Increasing the accessibility, improving the quality and extending the reusability of public sector information, in particular science resources of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, Wrocław Medical University and the Institute of Systems Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences until 10/17/2022.

Detailed objectives of the project

Facilitating access to science resources collected by three Wrocław Universities and IBS PAN to individual users (Polish citizens, in particular, students of primary and secondary schools, undergraduates, doctoral students, research and teaching staff as well as entrepreneurs) by expanding the Open Science Resource Atlas 2.0 (pol. Atlas Zasobów Otwartej Nauki 2.0, AZON) information platform.

Facilitating access to these resources for the blind, visually impaired and deaf by adapting selected resources and methods of their presentation to WCAG 2.0 standards.

Increasing the number of people using these resources through extensive promotion and free sharing of high-quality data on the AZON 2.0 platform and increasing the competences of people sharing resources and reusing them.

Increasing the quantity and quality of science resources made available online by three Wrocław Universities and IBS PAN, by digitizing non-digital resources and adapting the formats of existing digital collections to interoperability, openness and accessibility standards.

Make it easier for users to reuse these resources by introducing a metadata system and enabling automatic retrieval and machine processing, as well as by offering properly documented APIs.

Planned effects

Increasing the accessibility, improving the quality and extending the reusability of science resources.
